GET IN TOUCH YOUR PAST

Here's your chance to learn about your long-ago past, about the fascinating stories of our ancestors, about their impact on our current lives, and about their place in world history.

In response to comments and questions over the past few years, this year's Adult Education program will offer two courses on Jewish history.

I. CRASH COURSE IN JEWISH HISTORY. Thursday evenings, beginning October 18, 6:30-8:30. The course will include session on Biblical times; from a United Kingdom to Diaspora; the Jewish

movement West; the Enlightenment to World War I; Holocaust and Renewal. Texts will be provided. Cantor Rick and others will be instructors. (Free and open to the public)

II. EXPLORING VARIETIES OF BEING JEWISH. This course will meet every other Sunday morning, 10:30-noon, with some flexibility to meet Temple and school schedules. Initial class scheduled for October 28. The focus will be on the various ways in which Jews have practiced Judaism and identified themselves as Jews. We will explore early forms of diversity in ancient times, changes as Jews moved throughout the Middle East and the Diaspora in Europe; emancipation and moderns forms of Jewishness; the many diverse ways of being Jewish in the United States. Our text will be "The Way into the Varieties of Jewishness" by Sylvia Fishman. This text will be available for no more than $25; this will be the only charge for the class. III. PARSHA HA'SHAVUAH: Join us again for this popular Kosher Deli Lunch and Learn program the first Thursday of each month, noon - 1:00PM. Discuss the meaning and ramifications of the week's Torah portion while enjoying a deli lunch. Instructor: Cantor Rick (Ask about cost)

IV. INTRODUCTORY HEBREW. We will again offer a basic course in reading Hebrew. Sunday mornings, 9:15-10:15, beginning October 28. A nominal fee will cover the cost of the text. Instructor: Susan Adler. Advanced Hebrew will be offered again Instructor: Aaron Rosen and Maude Weiser! (A small fee is required to cover text material)
